Biography of Janey Godley - Comedian
Biography
J
Janey Godley is a stand-up comedian and raconteur, born in Glasgow, Scotland. For 14 years, she ran a public house in the tough East End of Glasgow where she staged the first performances by comedian and magician Jerry Sadowitz. She later ran comedy clubs in Glasgow before becoming a full-time stand-up herself, noted for her totally unscripted 60-minute comedy shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She also made multiple appearances at the Glastonbury Festival, after being recommended by 'father of alternative comedy' Malcolm Hardee. Her book "Handstands in the Dark" - the autobiography of her life before she entered showbusiness - was edited by John Fleming and published June 2005 in the United Kingdom|UK and Ireland by Ebury Press, a division of Random House. It told the story of her tough pre-showbiz life, her sexual abuse as a child, the murder of her mother, Glasgow's heroin 'plague' of the 1980s and her life in a world of gangsters. Godley's non-humorous one-woman play "Point of Yes" about Glasgow's heroin problem in the 1980s was premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2003 and a re-titled version "Smack - The Point of Yes" was staged at the Soho Theatre in the West End of London in June 2005.
